Halloween 2011 - Trunk-or-Treat

We had a lot of fun for Halloween.  The festivities started with our ward trunk-or-treat Friday night.  Of course after being warm all week, Friday turned crazy cold.  The whole night's activities were outside, so we were pretty chilly by the time the trunk-or-treat started.  Coop was warm in his cape though.
Nate had fun decorating the back of the car.
With the help of a few story books, we had been practicing how to say "Trick or treat," and that he'd get candy just for asking.  Coop seemed to know just what to do.
Superman and Super Cooper
Wonder Woman and Super Cooper
Super Cooper thought the candy was just super too.  He wouldn't let go of this dum-dum lollipop the whole night.  I finally had to pry it out of his hands to go to bed.
And thus the sugar-enduced coma began.

Cooper: Two Years Old

Cooper turned two almost exactly a month ago.  It's been a busy month full of sickness, fall family activities, and such, so here I am just now posting about him being two.  His 2-yr old doctor appointment was today, so I finally have stats to post as well.
Height: 35" (75th percentile)
Weight: 28.4 lbs. (50th percentile)
Head Circ.: 20-1/2" (95th percentile)
All this means that our little guy is growing taller, thinning out, and finally starting to grow into his head a little. :o)

As Cooper's birthday was nearing, I started practicing with him how to answer the two questions everyone asks children: How old are you? and What is your name?
If you ask how old he is, he'll hold up one finger and announce, "Tooper two!"
If you ask him his name, he'll say, "Tooper!"  If I prompt him, he'll say, "Tooper Dames," and if you're really lucky you might get "Smiff" at the end.

I couldn't resist this photo the other day.  I hadn't done laundry, and he was out of clean pants to wear, so I pulled out some new 2T size jeans and sent him off to school.  When he came home, this is what his pants looked like.  We were singing "pants on the floor" all night.  Such a skinny guy!  He's right in between 18-24 month and 2T in both pants and shirts.  He wears a little of each right now.

Our little guy is no longer a baby, and will quickly tell you he's a big boy.  We even bought him some big boy pants (pull-ups) to start the GRADUAL potty training process.  I'm not forcing it with this kid.  He's like clock-work though, so this morning as his usual time was approaching, I took of his diaper and let him go commando for a bit, thinking I'd be able to help him identify what was about to happen a bit easier.  I was multi-tasking getting myself ready for the day, and missed the opportunity.  Needless to say, I had a little present waiting for me in my room, and a very concerned toddler who was confused about why that ended up there and not in the potty.  All I could do was laugh about it as I cleaned it up.  Totally MY fault.  We are all products of our parents' successes AND mistakes, right? ;o)
I just LOVE this photo of him.  He loves to sit out on the front porch in the evening and play "I spy."  His favorite thing for me to have him guess are different colored flowers by the front porch.  He knows his colors, but still gets some of them mixed up.  If he's not sure, he'll usually guess "dreen!"  He sings the ABC song often, but some of the letters in the middle are more sounds you'd make if you weren't sure of the words of a song.  He can identify the letters A and O, and will proudly do so at any opportunity.  He knows lots of animals and animal sounds, although his elephant imitation sounds more like a rooster than an elephant.

His favorite things are firetrucks, school buses, tractors, BIG trucks (which he calls "BEEG chucks!") and trains.  He likes to listen to sounds outside and identify them (birds, bugs, airplanes, trains, cars, motorcycles, helicopters, etc.).  We live not far from a small airport and train tracks, so we get lots of aviation and train sounds.  Cooper would live outside and never come in the house if we'd let him.  Well, either that or in the car.  He loves to "drive" the car.  He'll tell you where he's going, and what he sees.  All of this while the car is turned off, sitting in our garage.  His imagination is budding!  He's also become quite the backseat driver.  Just in the last week or two, we've been driving and he'll say, "Doh dat way!  No! Dat way!" and he'll point the direction.  He gets upset when we don't go the way he wants.  He also likes to think we'll let him drive, and will make a mad dash for the front seat when we're trying to get him in his car seat in the back, all the while screaming, "Tooper drive!"

Coop loves to go to the local elementary school to play on the playground, and to see the school buses in the parking lot.  He knows where the playground is as we pass by, and will beg to go to the "paydound" and see the buses.  He can climb on the playground equipment with little assistance, and go down the slides himself.  He also likes to swing on the swings laying on his belly, but gets excited when one of us pushes him on the swing, and the other swings in tandem with him.

Cooper loves to sing, and is starting to make up songs to familiar tunes.  His life is fast becoming the Cooper Smith musical. I love listening to his little songs about what he's doing.  He also just recently started really pretending when playing.  When he plays cars and trucks (which is OFTEN), he makes all the noises, and tells a story.  Last night while I was doing the dishes, he was playing with his fireman action figure and some matchbox cars, pretending there was a fire and he was saving them all.  There were lots of crashing, screaming, and heroic "save you!" sounds.  It was the first time I noticed him playing so detailed.

Speaking of dishes, Cooper has "chores" he's expected to do.  He cleans up his toys before school, before meals, and before bed.  He helps me unload the dishwasher, and knows where the tupperware bowls and lids go, where the silverware belongs, and where other various bowls and such belong that are at his height.  He also likes to think he helps fold laundry, which is more like a wadded up bunch of clothes that I'd already folded neatly.  But he's really good about putting his dirty clothes in the hamper when he gets undressed, which I still have to coax him to do.  He does NOT like taking his clothes off.

The doctor was impressed today with Cooper's vocabulary.  Sometimes others can't understand what he's saying.  But he's getting pretty good, and others can actually carry on conversations with him now.  It's fun to see him communicating.  The other day at the playground he made friends with a little girl (3) and boy (5).  They had fun playing, and Cooper was sad when they had to go home.  He came home and told me "fends doh home.  Tooper sad."  It was so cute.

Despite the temper tantrums, which usually happen when he's tired or hungry (after all, he does have those Christensen genes in him), Cooper continues to be a very happy, very energetic, very loving and easy-going kid.  He makes every day wonderful.  We love you, Coopsta!

Painting Pumpkins

We painted pumpkins yesterday afternoon.  Cooper was so busy painting that he wouldn't stop for a photo op.
Stop trying to take my picture, Mom!
Actually, he was telling me how old he is.  He holds up one finger and says, "Tooper Two!"  Guess he was concentrating really hard.  Finally he smiled, but he was practically out of the photo.
Here we are on the porch with our finished pumpkins.  Mine is supposed to be a candy corn.  Yeah, an artist I'm not.  Cooper's pumpkin turned out very  Jackson Pollock-like.
He finally would take a picture for me with the pumpkins, but would not look at the camera, the little punk.
But then he was all smiles, asking me to take his picture with this flower.
What a kid.

Fall Fun - Riverbend Farm

Last Saturday morning we took a trip to a nearby farm for a fall visit.  They have lots of fun things like a petting zoo, but Cooper was not very interested in the animals.  He looked at them for all of about 2 seconds and decided he was done.

So we moved on to the Halloween-themed parts of the visit.  First, this big pumpkin, which was a dark room with a gazillion crazy kids running around.  Coop just stood there.  I can't blame him.
One of the main attractions of this particular farm were the big slides made out of old farm silos.  They have built stairs and ramps to climb up, and then big slides to come down.  Since Cooper LOVES slides, this was right up his alley.  Hi Dad--look how high up we are!

This one was the tallest one.
This one was our favorite!
Next came the tractor.  OK, well this one was really an old plow.  Cooper was like, "What is this supposed to be?  Fun?"
Ahhh, yes.  Now here's the real deal!  Driving a REAL farm tractor.  It was so big that they had built wooden steps for the kids to climb to get in it.  Coop was in heaven.
He indulged me.  This was one of my favorite pictures of the day.
Cooper's three main loves are: #1 Firetrucks (still calls them "nee-nahs"), #2 Tractors, and #3 Trains.  You can imagine his excitement at seeing this "tractor train" as he called it.  And we was ecstatic when he found out we were going to ride it.
Cooper and Daddy on the "tractor train," riding out to the pumpkin patch.
The pumpkin patch was fun, and we all picked out our own pumpkins.  Coop found his to be a great seat for finishing his pbj sandwich while we waited for Dad to go get the car.
Nothing tells me Cooper has had a good time more than finding him like this in the back seat less than five minutes down the road on the way home.
What a beautiful, fun fall day it was!

Coop the Tool Man

Even though we were home sick yesterday, we still managed to have some fun. Coop was using his new tool set to fix his toy shelf.Cheese! He's so cute you wouldn't know he had such a high fever.
Aunt Denise just shared some photos from his birthday. Here are a few more I really liked.

Happy 2nd Birthday, Cooper!

Cooper turned two over the weekend. I can't believe my baby is already two! Leading up to his birthday, we'd been practicing saying he's two, and holding up two fingers. We've also been practicing saying his full name, and answering "What is your name, and how old are you?", the two questions everyone seems to ask a toddler.

So Friday when we took his birthday cupcakes to school, he proudly walked up to his teacher and pronounced, "Pootah (Cooper), burfday, two!", and held up five fingers. He was so excited to have the cupcakes at school to celebrate his birthday and graduating to the next class.

His birthday was eventful, but not for the right reasons. Coop and I were sick all last week; he stayed home from school two days, and I was home from work all week. Friday he seemed to be doing better, so I sent him off to school, only to have the school call me at 3 pm to tell me he had a fever.

My instincts told me to get him to the doctor before the weekend, so we got him in late Friday afternoon to be seen. Diagnosis: double ear infections and a sinus infection. I felt so bad for the poor little guy, but was relieved to get him on antibiotics and better in time for his bday party the next day.

Saturday rolled around and he seemed to be perked up and doing better until noon when his fever came back with a vengence--103.7. Yikes! Poppy and Memaw had already cancelled their plans to visit, since Poppy is sick too. But Aunt Denise, Lindsay and Alison were on their way to our house by the time his fever came back. So they came to visit and have a little party anyway. Of course, Coop only took a 20-minute nap that day, which didn't help anything.

So the birthday guests arrived and we started the party. You can see how enthused Cooper is in the pictures. Here is the birthday boy with Alison.

The birthday party was puppy-themed, complete with dog bowls as serving dishes (which Nathan found utterly repulsive), and a dog bowl birthday cake. I made Coop's favorite dinner, steaks with sauted peppers and onions, black beans, and spanish rice, all served with tortilla chips and salsa. To Coop, all of the above food items are merely a salsa delivery mechanism.

We unwrapped presents, which Cooper had been excited about for days.

Alison gave him this adorable USC jersey. Now he can root for the gamecocks in style!

The presents before...

The presents after...

Aunt Denise gave him this awesome sand/water table to play outside. Even though he was sick, he was excited to try it out. He's played with it every day since.
His other two favorite presents are this fireman action figure that shoots some kind of water bazooka thing, and the lawn mower "just like dad's." He was afraid of the blue car that makes lots of noise and moves when the buttons are pushed. Dad "fixed" it by taking the batteries out, and now Coop likes it. We also gave him some construction tools, and he LOVES the power drill!

Here's the cake...

Coop was all excited about the cake and the "tar" (star) candles, until I lit them. Then he threw a fit. He's apparently still terrified of lit candles. Daddy blew out the candles while Coop and I stood a small distance away. But Cooper still didn't want ANYTHING to do with the cake, no eating it, nothing. What a kid.

Late Saturday night his fever spiked again to 104.8! It was awful trying to get the fever down and keep him comfortable. The fever lasted until Monday at noon. The doc thinks he had a viral infection on top of the ear/sinus infections. So awful!! Not a fun way to spend your birthday.

Sunday we had one more present to open. Coop came downstairs Sunday morning, and saw the present, went to rip it open, and then stopped and said to me, "Ohhhh, oh, oh oh. Wait for daddy." Yep, we needed to wait for daddy. But once daddy came downstairs, it was present-opening seriousness.

It was a lawn mower just like dad's! He HAD to go outside and try it immediately. Dad showed him how to start it.

And the rest of the day he spent pretty much putting gas in his new mower. Apparently that's the most important part.

I am glad, like my sister-in-law said, "that the plague has left the Smith household." Finally. Today we're finally feeling better. Coop is back at school. Too bad we can't do a birthday re-do once he's feeling better. Looking back, I should have just postponed it all. Hindsight...

Oh!

Lately when you explain something to Coop, or he realizes something on his own, he'll exclaim, "Ohhhhhhhh. Oh, oh, oh."
Every time.
Cracks me up.
