When my friend called the week before our move and asked if we'd like to join them for a day at the zoo 3 days after moving to our new home, I first thought, "Are you CRAZY? My house will be utter chaos at that point." Then I realized that may be just the reason to go--to escape the mess and have fun for one day.
So we did.
It was the perfect day to go to the zoo, at first a little chilly, but it warmed up by the end of the day. We left at 9 am and returned home at 7 pm--a long day for our little pack of 5 kids, 4 of which are under the age of 5. Riverbanks zoo is in Columbia, SC, a 90 min drive from our house, so we all piled into my friend's mini van equipped with lots of kid entertainment, and away we went!
The flamingos sure were pretty, but sure did stink!
The elephants were super friendly, coming right up as close as they could get. I don't recall ever being that close to an elephant before. The kids (and the moms) loved it.
The elephants were even close enough for Hudson to see them. He also really liked the monkeys, which were moving all over the place, so they easily caught his eye.
King of the jungle
My favorite is always the koala bear, which is always asleep, but you can get so close to it. They look so soft and furry, and the place smells like delicious eucalyptus, one of my favorite scents.

Hudson was finally napping when we got to the carousel, so I stayed with him and the strollers. But he woke up in time to wave to the kids each time they passed us.
It was a great day at the zoo, and a much needed break from unpacking.
